Twenty years in the Navy

I served in the United States Navy from 1993 to 2013. I started as an enlisted Nuclear Electrician and made Chief. Then I earned my commission and became a Nuclear Naval Officer. In the Navy we call that a mustang: someone who came up through the ranks and earned the officer’s bars the hard way. When I retired in 2013, the Navy awarded me the Meritorious Service Medal.

Twenty years around nuclear reactors teaches you two things fast. Details matter. And you do not cut corners, because people are counting on you. I bring both to every loan file.

Why I became a broker, not a banker

After the Navy I became a mortgage loan officer at ResMac, where they named me the company’s Hardest Working Loan Officer. I learned the business from the inside. I also learned its problem: a bank loan officer can only sell you the bank’s loan. The rate is whatever pads the bank’s margin, the fees get buried, and nobody at the table is really working for you.

So in March 2018 I founded Home Loans Inc and became a broker instead. A broker is not a bank. I am not tied to one lender’s rate sheet. I shop dozens of wholesale lenders so they compete for your loan, and I hand you the savings with no junk fees stacked on top. We are a small mom-and-pop shop on purpose. You work with me, not a queue.

Where that has gotten us

Doing it this way works. Today I am consistently ranked among the top-100 mortgage brokers in the country, and I am the highest-reviewed mortgage broker in South Carolina, with more than 400 five-star Google reviews from the families I have served. I wrote four books to help borrowers and loan officers understand this business. Money.com named me to its best-lender list, and my work has been featured by Forbes and Yahoo Finance.

The number I am proudest of is a smaller one. In 2023 I closed 40 loans that other lenders had already turned down. A decline at one bank is one bank’s box, not a verdict on you. Because I look at your whole picture across many lenders, I can often find the yes that someone else missed.

Off the clock

I am a Christian, a husband, and a father first. That is the order that keeps me honest. I run my business out of North Charleston, and I treat every file like it belongs to my own family, because the family across the table is trusting me with theirs.
